Instantly vs Smartlead: Which Cold Email Tool Fits?
Instantly and Smartlead both send cold email from many inboxes with warm-up, sequences and a shared reply inbox. Instantly adds a lead database and AI reply agents; Smartlead adds built-in domain setup and sender rotation. Both price by monthly sending volume. For most teams, list quality, separate warmed domains and verification matter more than which one you choose.
A disclosure before the comparison
Trexinet runs client outbound on Smartlead, so weigh our view accordingly. We have tried to keep this comparison even-handed: every price below comes from the vendor's own pricing page, and we say what each tool is good at. Where we could not confirm something, we say so.
What do Instantly and Smartlead each do?
Both tools are built for the same core job: sending cold email at volume from many mailboxes, while keeping those mailboxes warm and collecting replies in one place.
Instantly describes itself as a cold email sending platform with unlimited email accounts and warm-up, sequences, a unified reply inbox, a lead database and AI reply agents. It offers a 14-day free trial with no card. Its strength is having sending, a lead source and reply handling in one product.
Smartlead describes itself as cold email infrastructure: unlimited mailboxes, built-in setup and warm-up covering SPF, DKIM, DMARC and sender rotation, a master inbox, AI agents and lead finding. It offers a free trial. Its strength is the infrastructure side, helping you set up and rotate many sending accounts correctly.
How does Instantly pricing work?

- Hypergrowth: $97/mo.

An important caveat on Instantly's prices
Instantly's page showed more than one pricing layout during our check, and yearly prices could not be confirmed. Treat the figures above as monthly prices from one displayed layout, and confirm current plans, sending limits and any annual discount on Instantly's site before you buy. The same advice applies to every price in this article, because vendors change plans.
How does Smartlead pricing work?
As listed on Smartlead's pricing page on September 25, 2026, each plan shows a monthly price, a yearly price per month, and the sends included each month. Smartlead says yearly billing saves 17%.

- Pro: $94 billed monthly, or $78 a month billed yearly, for 90,000 sends.

What matters more than the sending tool?
A sender cannot fix a bad list. Both tools will deliver whatever you load into them, and mailbox providers judge you on what happens next: bounces, spam complaints and replies. In our experience, three things decide results before the choice of sender does.
In our own campaigns, list verification and suppression cut the hard bounce rate from 11.17% to 0.43%. For a B2B SaaS client in fleet safety, hard bounces fell from 1,637 on the first send to 75 on the third send of the same campaign wave, with bounce suppression between sends. The sending tool did not change between those sends. The list did.
- List quality: target people who plausibly need what you sell. A tight list gets more replies and fewer complaints.
- Separate, warmed sending domains: never send cold email from your main company domain. Use separate domains, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and warm the inboxes before the first campaign.
- Verification and suppression: verify every address before it is loaded, and suppress hard bounces and unsubscribes between sends.
What should you check during a trial?
Both vendors offer a free trial, so test with your own setup rather than a demo. Use the same small verified list and the same warmed inboxes in each tool, and write down what you find.
- Monthly send volume: match the plan to what you will really send, including follow-ups, not just first touches.
- Billing term: compare monthly with monthly and yearly with yearly. Smartlead lists a yearly discount; Instantly's yearly prices could not be confirmed in our check.
- Inbox health view: how quickly can you see which mailbox or domain has a problem and pause it?
- Reply handling: can your team sort interested, not now, referral, out of office and unsubscribe replies quickly, with a person reviewing anything ambiguous?
- CRM sync: do replies and outcomes reach your CRM without manual copying?
- Suppression: can you upload a suppression list and keep it applied across every campaign?
Which one should you choose?
Instantly may suit you if you want a lead database, sending and AI reply agents in one product, and you like its plan structure after confirming current prices.
Smartlead may suit you if you run many mailboxes across several domains and want setup, DNS records and sender rotation handled inside the tool, with a published yearly discount.
Either way, run a real trial. Connect a few warmed inboxes, load a small verified list, and judge the day-to-day work: how easy it is to spot a problem inbox, handle replies and pause a sequence. Compare the plan that matches your actual monthly sends, on the same billing term.
The tool is a small part of the total work. The bigger cost is the operator's time: building and verifying lists, warming domains, writing and approving copy, and reading every reply. For a B2B SaaS client in fleet safety, we ran five persona outbound campaigns to 9,962 verified contacts across 35 inboxes. Trexinet runs that system as a managed program, with AI doing research and drafting and a person approving every send. It is one option alongside running it yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Is Smartlead cheaper than Instantly?
At the entry level as listed on September 25, 2026, Smartlead Base is $39 billed monthly for 6,000 sends and Instantly Growth is $47/mo for 5,000 emails a month. Instantly's yearly prices could not be confirmed during our check, so compare current plans on both sites, on the same billing term and at your real volume.
How much does Instantly cost?
As displayed on Instantly's pricing page on September 25, 2026, monthly outreach plans were Growth $47/mo, Hypergrowth $97/mo, Light Speed $358/mo and Enterprise custom. The page showed more than one pricing layout during our check, and yearly prices could not be confirmed. Check Instantly's site for current plans.
Do Instantly and Smartlead include email warm-up?
Yes, both list warm-up. Instantly lists unlimited email accounts and warm-up. Smartlead lists built-in setup and warm-up, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC and sender rotation. Warm-up helps new inboxes build a sending history, but it does not replace verifying your list and suppressing bounces between sends.
Can I use my main company domain with either tool?
You can connect it, but we do not recommend sending cold email from your main domain with any tool. Use separate sending domains with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up, and warm the inboxes first. That way a problem with cold outreach does not affect the email your customers and team rely on.
Does the sending tool affect reply rates?
Much less than the list and the message do. Both tools send email and track replies. Who you target, whether the address is verified, how warm the sending domain is, and whether the email is relevant to the reader decide most of the outcome. Pick the tool your team will run carefully every day.
Can I switch from Instantly to Smartlead, or the other way?
Yes. Both connect to ordinary mailboxes, so your domains and inboxes stay yours. Before switching, export your suppression list, bounces and unsubscribes, and load them into the new tool first. Pause sequences in the old tool so no contact receives the same step twice, then restart from where each contact left off.
